On 17 January, MEDREG members EgyptERA and EMRC held a one-day technical exchange online with the Turkish regulator EMRA to update their performance monitoring and evaluation system methodology for Distribution System Operators.
This technical assistance aimed at enhancing the understanding of existing challenges and opportunities by using the adequate Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and improve the Egyptian and Jordanian regulators’ capabilities.
During this one-day activity, EMRA highlighted different elements of interest to the participating regulators among which were:

• The review of the current methodology, identifying strengths and weaknesses and providing recommendations and guidance related to existing KPIs along with the technical performance monitoring and evaluation system methodology. 
• The definition and selection of relevant KPIs to assess the technical performance of DSOs and the examination of KPIs related to system reliability, voltage levels, power quality, load management, and outage management. The identification of available software tools, reference material and examples from leading jurisdictions was also carried out.
• The role of the regulatory framework in supporting effective technical and financial performance monitoring and evaluation was examined and discussions were held on policy considerations and incentives to promote the adoption of updated methodologies by DSOs.

The intense day of knowledge sharing between regulatory peers provided our Egyptian and Jordanian members a comprehensive framework for updating their technical performance monitoring and evaluation system for DSOs, addressing key aspects related to methodology, data collection, analysis, reporting, integration of renewable energy, and the utilization of smart grid technologies.
