Today in Antalya, the Associations of Mediterranean Energy Regulators (MEDREG) and Transmission System Operators (Med-TSO) held a workshop titled “Towards an Interconnected Mediterranean Electricity Market: Overcoming Technical and Policy Barriers”, hosted by the Turkish Energy Market Regulatory Authority together with Teias, the Turkish Transmission System Operators. They explored actionable strategies to enhance the efficient and reliable operation of electricity interconnections in the Mediterranean region. These interconnections are crucial for ensuring energy security, stability, and enabling the effective integration of renewable energy sources into the power systems.
MEDREG held a forward-thinking discussion on the transformative role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the energy sector, examining its applications, opportunities, and implications. Launched with a welcome address from Italy’s State Secretary for Technological Innovation, Alessio Butti, the high-level discussion brought together top representatives from consulting firms, cybersecurity agencies, research centres, and information and computer technology corporations.
Hosted in the Sicilian archaeological site of Selinunte by the Italian Regulatory Authority for the Energy and Environment (ARERA), the Presidents of energy regulatory authorities, member of MEDREG, gathered for the fourth time with industry leaders and policymakers from across the Mediterranean region to steer reflections and identify winning strategies that incentivise investments in cross border interconnections and energy infrastructures.

On 14 June, the Presidents of twelve energy regulatory authorities from Mediterranean countries convened in Rhodes (Greece) to address bottlenecks, challenges, successful projects, and best practice towards the energy transition in the Mediterranean region. The gathering, attended by HE. Dr. Walid Fayad, Minister of Energy and Water of Lebanon, aimed to foster collaboration and exchange practical solutions to expedite the decarbonisation of the energy sector in the region.
Lebanon has long envisioned the creation of an Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) to regulate the sector and to restructure the electricity market.
As the Ministry of Energy and Water has prepared an organisational structure of the board members and is currently in the process of recruiting them, HE Minister Dr. Walid Fayad invited MEDREG President Mr. Abdellatif Bardach, also President of the Moroccan Electricity Regulatory Authority (ANRE) to share views and advice on that process, taking into account all MEDREG members’ experience.
