MEDREG welcomes Lebanon and Morocco as new members
1 February 2019

MEDREG is delighted to welcome two new Members in the club of Mediterranean energy regulators with the recent joining of the Lebanese Centre for Energy Conservation (LCEC) and the Moroccan Electricity Regulatory Authority. With these new additions, the organisation counts an enlarged membership of 27 energy regulatory authorities from 22 countries, plus Mauritania as a perspective member.
Following two years of active involvement in the activities undertaken by MEDREG, the Lebanese Ministry of Energy and Water nominated the Lebanese Centre for Energy Conservation (LCEC) to represent Lebanon in our organisation. The LCEC new membership was unanimously accepted by the General Assembly, held on 29 November in Istanbul.

Meanwhile, the appointment of Mr. Abdellatif Bardach as President of the Moroccan Electricity Regulatory Authority (ANRE) naturally formalised the membership of the recently established Moroccan regulator to MEDREG.

Participating in MEDREG’s last General Assembly, Mr Bardach indicated that he would welcome MEDREG’s support on unbundlingtariffs and capacity building to accompany the profound changes happening in the Moroccan electricity sector.

The new independent regulator will focus its efforts on making a more transparent, clearer and well-functioning electricity market which becomes gradually open to competition. The promotion of renewable energy sources is also one of the main priorities awaiting ANRE.

MEDREG members, joined by the Secretariat, reiterate their warm welcome to these new members and their will to further strengthening the ongoing cooperation to gradually build a strong and long-lasting relationship.
