MEDREG plans its report on infrastructure, smart grid case studies, and support activities on renewable energies in Algeria and Palestine
28 March 2018

Paris, France

MEDREG’s Working Groups on Electricity (ELE WG) and on Renewable Energy Sources and Energy Efficiency (RES WG) met on 28 March 2018 in Paris, in the premises of MEDREG’s French member, the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE).

The ELE WG discussed a methodology for Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA) and Cross-Border Cost Allocation (CBCA) for the Mediterranean infrastructure projects. Elaborated in cooperation with Med-TSO, this infrastructure report is expected by the end of 2018.

Meanwhile, the RES WG further planned its support activities to promote the use of renewable energy sources and energy efficiency in Algeria and Palestine.

At the request of our Palestinian member PERC, MEDREG is working on a report that will include recommendations and guidelines to promote the use of RES and energy efficiency in Palestine and a roadmap towards determining the purchase price from different RES sources.

For its part, our Algerian member CREG is developing and evaluating a methodology for the estimation of RES-generated electricity prices through tenders and auctions. MEDREG will support CREG by sharing specific country experiences, representing different contexts, and will aim to provide lessons learned and best practices on how governments can design and implement auctions in a most cost-efficient way while ensuring that winning projects come online in a timely manner.

Meeting back-to-back on the same day, the two groups held a joint session to discuss their joint deliverable on smart grids. While national case studies on the different aspects pertaining to smart grids are being collected, the groups reviewed the analytical approach they want to use in order to draw recommendations and insights from the case studies. A first draft of the report should be available by the next MEDREG General Assembly in June.
